Kapha Dosha

Kapha relates to the mucous membranes, fatty tissue and the lymphatic systems. Kapha's characteristics include slow speech, a need for plenty of deep sleep, heavy perspiration, good memory, at times lethargic energy, a dislike of cold and damp and an appreciation of good food and familiar places. Kapha's body type is large, often overweight, as with the ectomorph type.

Pitta Dosha

Pitta relates to the metabolism and digestion. Characteristics include clear memory, ambition, strong appetite with a tendency toward diarrhea, great thirst and a high libido. The pitta body type is of medium build, as a mesomorph type.

Vatha Herbs

Herbs that can reduce excess vatha include ginger, alfalfa, cardamom, clove, licorice, turmeric, cinnamon, myrrh, coriander, mustard and vetiver. Add these herbs to food while cooking, use the aromatherapy oils of these herbs, or brew as a tea.

Vatha related to the nervous system and the body's energy. Characteristics include constipation, a creative mind, poor long-term memory, rapid speech, a love of travel, and a dislike of cold weather. The body type appears thin and endomorphic.

Cayenne Pepper For Cold Feet

A little known use for cayenne pepper is as a topical treatment for cold feet. In cold weather, sprinkle cayenne pepper into your socks to heat your feet. Do not use if you have blisters or broken skin on the feet.

Herbal Tea For Arthritis

Instead of soft drinks or other sugary drinks, consider this herbal blend, hot or iced, as a daily beverage. Combine equal parts of alfalfa, chickweed and yucca. Add honey or lemon to taste. These herbs have anti-inflammatory and pain relieving effects in arthritic conditions.

Herbal Tea For Colds

This brew is good to have on hand during cold season. Keep a mixture of the dried herbs do you can make a quick cup at the first sign of a cold, or to protect yourself if a family member or coworker is showing symptoms. Mix equal parts of hyssop, peppermint, rosehips and sage. One heaping teaspoon per one cup of boiling water makes a good brew. Steep 1/4 freshly grated ginger along with the dried mix.

Couch Grass For Bladder Irritation

Couch grass is soothing to the membranes of the urinary track and is useful in treating simple bladder irritation as well as cystitis. Boil one teaspoon of couch grass root for 30 minutes in 3 cups of water. Cool, and sip a small amount throughout the day. Avoid caffeine and sugar while you are treating bladder infections.

Horsetail Herb For Osteoporosis

Horsetail tea is rich in calcium and silica that help to form strong bones. Brew fresh daily and drink one cup 3 to 4 times a week. Avoid substances that rob the body of calcium such as antacids, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, distilled water and soft drinks.

Chlorophyll Cleanser

Chlorella and spirulina are two types of edible algae that are very high in chlorophyll, a natural cleanser for the bloodstream and digestive tract. These products are available in health food stores and some pharmacies. Follow label directions for dosage.

Aromatherapy For Insomnia

15-25% of adults can suffer from sleepless nights. There are alternatives to the use of drugs to induce sleep. A warm bath just before bed is a great way to relax. The warmth can help you to feel sleepy, and adding 2 drops each of the essential oils of orange blossom, meadowsweet and hops can insure a restful night.

In older books on herbal medicine, you might read about herbs used to treat "the grippe", or influenza. Useful herbs for the flu include garlic and cayenne, Echinacea and olive leaf extract.

Caution About Kava

Kava kava has been voluntarily removed from the market in Great Britain after one study connected the use of Kava with liver damage. Kava is used effectively for insomnia, stress and anxiety. Until we know more, carefully follow label directions and do not combine Kava with drug medications for sleep or with alcohol. There are too many unknown factors to declare this herb as unsafe for use.
